It is a special kind of connection: through his very respectful and sensitive approach to the sperm whales, Patrick is able to gain their trust and get very close to them. In doing so, however, he risks not only putting himself in serious danger, but also destroying the relationship that has been built up over the years. To gain even more insight into the world of sperm whales, Patrick forms a close relationship with a female whale he names "Dolores" and the moments the two share are special and touching. Patrick and the Whale deserves this award because the protagonist takes us into the world of sperm whales through his approachable and incredibly respectful manner and lets us share in his emotions and feelings.
